Parregea – Parrega (Wûnseradiel municipality, over 500 inhabitants) The sprawling, elongated village of Parrega, originating from the early Middle Ages, is on the 'Warkumer Trekfeart' (Workum Canal). The village has had many names across the centuries, varying from Epange to Uppanerynghe to Parrega. The canal between Bolsward and Workum was excavated in 1609. In those days the west side of Parrega bordered the Parregaastermeer lake, and fishing was an important source of income. In the years 1876-1879 the lake was reclaimed which put an end to the Parregaaster's lucrative fishing trade. The oldest buildings in Parrega can be found on and around the terp. The 'Johannes de Doperkerk' (John the Baptist church) dating from 1300 is constructed from large, yellow bricks. The village café, the rectory, the church and the properties in-between combine to provide a scene with historic character.
