Warkum - Workum (Nijefurd municipality, 3,880 inhabitants) Workum is one of the oldest towns in the province of Friesland. It acquired civic rights in 1399 and grew to be one of the most important trade centres for shipping on the Zuiderzee inlet and far beyond. Industrial activity came after the sixteenth century, including shipyards, sail makers, weaving mills and spinning mills. After this Workum gained a dairy processing plant, pottery industry and became more of a central hub for the surrounding area. Nowadays, Workum attracts large numbers of tourists. During your walk in Workum you will be able to visit the 'Warkums Erfskip' antiquities room, the famous 'Jopie Huisman' museum or the 'De Hoop' shipbuilding yard, the old shipyard near Workum's old sea lock.
