De Gaastmar – Gaastmeer (Wymbritseradiel municipality, 280 inhabitants) Gaastmeer, which is approximately 875 years old, is a true water-sports location. The village directly adjoins a number of Frisian lakes, such as De Fluezen, the Hegemer Mar and the Grutte Gaastmar. Up to just before the war Gaastmeer had a lively eel-trade with England. But today, too, there is still a professional freshwater fishing company established in the village. The church is a heritage-listed building and has a beautiful, 17th century oak pulpit. The bell tower dates from 1517. ‘Attema State’ is a listed farm which houses a ‘bêd en brochje’ (bed and breakfast). The famous Frisian poet Jan Jelles Hof was born in Gaastmeer, where a street in the village bears his name.
