Laaksum – Laaxum (Nijefurd municipality) Laaxum's written history begins in the year 1345, the year in which the Count of Holland landed near Laaxum in an attempt to attack Friesland. The small harbour at Laaxum was built in 1912. Before this time the fishermen used the harbour at Stavoren, although a natural inlet to the south-east of Laaxum was also used. However, an emergency harbour near Stavoren was needed, for fishermen could not reach Stavoren harbour in stormy weather. In a letter to the Friesland Provincial council in 1904 the fishermen from Stavoren wrote that ""the most suitable place [for the harbour] is the village of Laaxum"". And so the harbour at Laaxum was built in 1912. Ten fishing vessels have their home port in Laaxum, which now lays claim to the smallest harbour in Europe.
