Himmelum - Hemelum (Nijefurd municipality, 500 inhabitants) The landscape of Hemelum has two heights, sand and clay flats, lakes and an inner dike between Hemelum and Koudum. Hemelum is conspicuously cut-off from the other elevated villages. The residents of the village are in no doubt: the name Hemelum is a direct reference to the heavenly qualities of their village which have been recognized for more than 800 years! The earliest information about Hemelum dates from 1180. By around 1250, Hemelum had a stately home, a number of estates and a monastery. The Benedictine nunnery was one of the first convents in Friesland. The Reformed Church in Buorren was taken into use in 1889. When the Protestant and Dutch Reformed churches 'merged', this church was sold and nowadays the building is used as a Russian Orthodox monastery. Hemelum and monastery-life appear to be inseparably linked.
