Wikel - Wijckel (Gaasterlân-Sleat municipality, 690 inhabitants) Wyckel and Menno, Baron of Coehoorn are often uttered in the same breath. Around 1680 the internationally renowned fortress builder and general had a large park built at the edge the village, around his castle Meerenstein. This park is now known as the Coehornbos forest. The nature organization 'It Fryske Gea' bought the forest, landscaped in the French style, in 1949 on account of its botanical, historic and recreational value. Unusual 'stintsplanten' (flora around fortifications and old farms) can be found in the forest. The eastern edge of the forest affords a magnificent view across the estates and the Slotermeer lake. Nothing remains of the noble Meerenstein country house, which was demolished around 1811. The open section of the forest now serves as an ice rink and sports field. Van Coehoorn's tomb can be found in the monumental tomb of the Reformed Church.
